OLED display technology defined

OLED stands for Organic Light-Emitting Diode. In these displays, organic compounds emit light when an electric current is applied. Since each pixel generates its own light, OLED screens do not need a separate backlight layer, allowing for thinner designs and deeper blacks by simply turning off black pixels. This results in excellent contrast and energy efficiency, especially when viewing content with dark backgrounds. OLED technology is used in high-end smartphones, televisions, and monitors. It is the foundation for AMOLED and Super AMOLED variants. Entry-level OLED devices may cost around $300, while premium OLED TVs and [flagship phones](/glossary/flagship) can range from $1,000 to $3,000 or more.
